Cricket Fielding Positions

Take a look at the cricket fielding positions below for both Left and Right handed batsmen.

Fielding Restrictions & Power Play

Previously, in One Day Internationals (ODI), there were no fielding restrictions. The fielding captain could place his players anywhere on the field. The ICC then introduced the 15 over field restriction rule during the World Cup in 1996. This fielding resrtiction meant that only 2 fielders were allowed outside the 30 yard circle for the first 15 overs of the innings, and they had to be in catching positions. After the 15 overs, 5 fielders were then allowed outside the 30 yard circle.

In 2005, the ICC made some changes to the restriction rule. The previous 15 over field restriction were now increased to 20 overs, which was divided into three sections, called Power Play.

Power Play 1
This 1st Powerplay is mandatory for the first 10 overs of a ODI innings. Only two fielders are allowed outside the 30 yards circle and the two fielders must be in catching positions.

Power Play 2 and 3 :-
The 2nd and 3rd Power Plays are divided into two sections of 5 overs each. These are also known as the batting powerplay and fielding powerplay . Once the powerplay is requested, only 3 fielders are allowed outside the 30 yard circle. The three fielders doesn't have to be in catching positions.

Sometimes ODI innings are reduced from 50 overs due to several factors. In that case, powerplay overs are reduced in following format..
