The Journey Of West Indies Cricket
The West Indian cricket team, also referred to as The
Windies, is one
of the 8 international cricket teams with Test Status and is made up of
the best cricket players from most of the Caribbean countries.
West
Indies Cricket enjoyed great success between the 1970s to the early
1990s. The West Indies cricket team were considered if not the
strongest, one of the most formidable teams both in Tests and One Days.
In that era, The
West Indies produced a lot of great cricketers, some
being considered among the best in the world. Famous players like Brian
Lara, who is the current world record holder for the highest individual
Test score, Courtney Walsh, Curtley Ambrose, Sir Gary Sobers, Desmond
Haynes, Gordon Greenidge, George Headley, Clive Lloyd, Lance Gibbs and
Malcolm Marshall are only some of the players who were of high caliber.
Many West Indian cricketers have been inducted into the ICC Hall of
Fame.
In terms of success, the
Windies have won two ICC Cricket World Cups,
one in 1975 and the other in 1979. They are also 2004 ICC Champions
Trophy Champions. Other than the Champions Trophy in 2004,
West Indies
cricket has had nothing more to shout about in recent time, as their
once glory has faded into a battle of survival.
The
West Indies are
currently going through harsh times, as a result of an ongoing dispute
between the players, more so WIPA (West Indies Players Association) and
the WICB ( West Indies Cricket Board). This feud is one of the main
factors affecting
West Indies Cricket and its development.
